Keep Up
A trend that has popped up over the past few years is artists releasing sped-up versions of their songs (depressingly, I suspect this is to cater to the very short attention spans of the TikTok generation). Co-incidentally, I've always enjoyed listening to sped-up versions of my own songs (in some cases, more than the originals) as it makes them sound fresh and different, and like they're being sung by someone other that myself.
I decided I wanted to release a collection of them, so I put together a list of my songs that sounded particularly good sped-up - it ended up mostly being mid-tempo songs, as ballads lost some of their emotion when they were sped-up, and songs that were already up-tempo sounded silly when they were made even faster. I chose 13 of my own songs, and 3 of the collaborations I'd done. After reaching out to my collaborators for their approval, I created a track-listing that I felt flowed well.
When it came to designing the cover, there were a few pictures I was torn between. I asked my followers on Twitter and Instagram to help me decide which one to use, and in the end I went with this picture I found on unsplash.com. I think it was the best choice, as it conveys both speed and humour (both appropriate for an album of sped-up songs sung in a high voice!).
The album was released on 19th July 2024.
