THE YELLOW UMBRELLA

Kids, did I ever tell ya
The story of the yellow umbrella?
There's a couple of versions
And you know the short one
So sit down and I'll tell you the long one

It all started on the day
Your aunt and uncle first got engaged
When across the room I saw someone
She was special, just not 'the one'

'Cause it involves fate and chance
Well-intentioned gestures of romance
Girls and suits, blue french horns and red cowboy boots
Codes got broken and so did some hearts
But everything played its part
There are friends and lovers and so many others
In the story of how I met your mother

I've had some close calls in my time
There were weddings - one of them mine
A movie where I was wrongly portrayed
Bets and fights and leaps of faith

She saw me giving a speech
One time I glimpsed her feet
But just like your mother's yellow umbrella
Eventually we got together

'Cause love involves fate and chance
Well-intentioned gestures of romance
Girls and suits, blue french horns and red cowboy boots
Codes got broken and so did some hearts
But everything played its part
There are friends and lovers and so many others
In the story of how I met your mother
